‘Serving our community and bringing hope; in practical, supportive and spiritual ways in partnership with Christians Against Poverty – CAP’
CAP’s vision statement is; “Freeing people from the miserable grip of UK poverty. Always through the Church. Always hope.” We are committed to working with CAP, addressing some of the causes of poverty and debt in our local community.
Poverty is not just about money. It affects relationships, physical and mental health, and can seem like a prison with no escape. CAP is primarily a debt counselling charity founded in 1996 by John Kirkby, who had experienced unmanageable debt for himself, causing the breakdown of his marriage and losing his home.
CAP also tackles some of the causes of debt, through its 3 Services; Job Clubs, Life Skills Course and Fresh Start Groups, (for people with life affecting dependencies), as well as the award winning CAP Money Course.
At Springfield we run three CAP Job Clubs each year and several CAP Money Courses.
CAP JOB CLUB
Anyone who is trying to find work is welcome to our free Job Club. We meet for 9 weeks on Thursday evenings. The course includes sessions on Finding Motivation, Overcoming Obstacles, Identifying your strengths, CVs, Applications and Interviews. Community is important, so we share a hot meal, before our trained coaches have one to one meetings with members. The rest of the team are happy to chat, help with more general job searches and applications. Cake is involved. Obviously.
CAP MONEY COURSE
The CAP Money Course is a free short course that makes managing your money simple. It is for anyone, whether money isn’t a problem, or someone is struggling at the end of each month. We are flexible about when we run the course, to suit people who would like to come. Everyone who attends, can sign up to access a simple to use budget worksheet We also run the youth course in schools Year 9s and above. We run the student course for those going to university, or going into their second or final year, needing to get a better grip on their finances.
